Gran Canaria is a miniature continent with a sample of very unusual landscapes, located in the middle of an enormously diverse archipelago. Perhaps for this reason, UNESCO decided in 2005 to award the island the seal of Biosphere Reserve, thus recognising its environmental quality, prestige and international projection. Almost half of the geographical area of Gran Canaria (around 43%) was included in the Biosphere Reserve, including six rural population centres strongly linked to traditional activities. "Our traditions, customs and gastronomy... together with a unique flora, fauna and orography, make up a unique environment to be discovered". But what is it about the Nature of Gran Canaria that merits this recognition by UNESCO? In order to be awarded the Biosphere Reserve seal, the area must possess a combination of special ecological and anthropological systems, as well as having biodiversity conservation measures in place.
